Best Tent for a tall person: 2024 Review

Overall Winner “Best Tent for a Tall Person”

Dream House Yurt Bell Tent

Dream House Outdoor Waterproof Cotton Canvas Family Camping Bell Tent (Beige Cotton Canvas Tent, Diameter 4 Meter)

The Dream House Yurt Bell Tent provides the best combination of specs for size, durability, and waterproofing on our list. This tent comes in multiple sizes of the same model, but each option ranks best in its class of tents for tall people.

For the smallest size, which is 9’9 ½” in diameter, the Dream House stands 6’6,” which hovers around the average to short end, but its largest tent at 16’5” stands a towering 9’9 ½”–the largest and tallest on our list. This is also one of the most waterproof tents that we came across with a 3000 mm hydrostatic rating for the canopy and a 5000 mm hydrostatic rating for the floor.

Even better, the Dream House Yurt Bell Tent is also one of the most durable options we encountered with a canopy made of 285 gsm cotton canvas and a floor made out of 540 gsm PVC. To reinforce that durability, this tall tent also employs double stitching and is the model we reviewed that comes with a stove jack opening.

Bottom Line: The Dream House Yurt Bell Tent checks all of the boxes with the most durable construction, the best waterproofing, and the tallest peak height plus floor sleeping space on our list.

You’re in the right place! In this guide, we will be covering the following:

    • What to look for in tall tents?
    • Reviews of five of the best tents for tall people
    • Our #1 pick for the best tall camping tent

When camping, choosing the right tent is one of the most important decisions you can make and often spells the difference between a trip of leisure and one of frustration. While overall size, durability, and protection are all important, many people find having to stoop the whole trip a deal-breaker.

When choosing a tall tent, you generally want to make sure that the tent is over 6’ tall– often with a little more height for “breathing room.” As this review is specifically for taller folks, we made it a point to only include camping tents on our list that are 6’4” or taller.

That is why we put together a list of the five best tents for tall people, highlighting what each one does best. We also provide a helpful buyer’s guide, so you can figure out which combination of features are worth paying for and get the tall tent of your dreams for a fun camping trip.

Buying Guide: How to choose a Tall Tent

Overall Size (Height & Floor Area)

Considering this list is about tents for tall people, the overall size of the tent is easily one of the more important qualities with the height holding special significance. It is important to note that the height of a tent does not necessarily apply to the entire tent and may simply refer to its apex.

As mentioned previously, all of the tents are at least 6’4” tall, but you may want to look for a model that is closer to 7’ to make sure it is tall at the edges of the tent too. For the floor area, you do not necessarily need a large tent, but looking for one that is at least 10’ on one side can help for functional space.

Ease of Assembly

One of the more common and useful designs for easy assembly is the pop-up or pre-attached style, and though they differ a bit, both allow for one or two people to quickly and easily assemble even tall tents. The pop-up and pre-attached designs are the easiest to assemble, but the fabric needs to be durable, or it may tear from the pole and ruin the tent.

It is worth noting that tents for tall people tend to be more challenging to assemble in general due to the larger size.

Pop-up tents are a great option if you infrequently camp for shorter periods, but more traditional support systems tend to last longer– both during a single trip and over multiple trips.

Water & Windproofing

Waterproofing is one of the more important considerations regardless of the specific type of tent you use to prevent your gear or self from getting soaked in a rainstorm. Waterproofing can use sealed seams and bathtub floor designs, but the most important quality to consider is the hydrostatic rating given in millimeters of resistance.

In terms of windproofing, this is one area where tents for tall people tend to suffer more than most other niches, as their height inherently makes them less wind-resistant. One way that a taller tent can still offer solid wind resistance is by using a design with a curved roof, though this reduces some of the functional interior space.

Packed Size & Weight

Tall tents will weigh more on average than other types of tents and are not great choices for backpackers or carrying for extended trips in general. Similarly, the additional supports and material require more space to pack up, though some manufacturers at least include wheeled carrying cases to make this task easier.

Breathability

The first method of increasing breathability is by adding windows and a mesh screen door to the tent, though this can only take you so far. Thankfully, tall tents with their larger floor space allow for more windows and doors than most other types of tents, but ventilation can still be improved further.

Some manufacturers go well-beyond standard ventilation and make sure that the roof is mesh, so hot air can easily rise out of the top. Taking this a step further, other manufacturers also make it a point to include floor vents, so cooler air can enter through the floor and further push hot air out of the mesh roof.

Durability

If you need a tent that you can use for multiple trips or an extended trip, look for one with thicker materials. The most durable tents use thick materials with denser weaves, though this further increases the weight of an already heavy type of tent.

Beyond the thickness of the material, the type of material is also crucial, with canvas cotton being more durable than most synthetic fibers of equal weight. However, if you only need a tent infrequently or for shorter camping trips, synthetic fibers are fine– though they should still have a thick weave if the tent is tall.

Because of the greater amount of material used, taller tents can be more prone to tearing as the weight of the material pulls at the weave and seams. On top of that, the use of rectangular designs are naturally less structurally sound than domed or triangular designs.

Other Features

In terms of extra features, easily, the most useful are places to store your gear with pockets attached to the sides and loft being the most common. Since tall tents are also often large in general, the ability to divide the floor space with a room divider, creating separate rooms increases privacy and comfort.

Another great additional feature of some tall tents is an external space made by either an overhead awning or an enclosed mesh porch. Outside of these features, an electrical cord port allows you power gear inside the tent without having to worry about bugs or water getting in.

Tents for Tall People: The Results

Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin Tent

Best Budget Tent for Tall People

Ozark Trail 11 Person 3 Room 14' x 14' Instant Cabin Tent (Orange)

Ozark Trail is the Walmart in-house brand of outdoor gear, and following in Walmart’s longstanding tradition of low prices is an inexpensive tent– especially considering what else it provides. One of the better qualities of this tent is the total floor size, which sits at 14’ x 14’– the second largest tent on our list.

Even better, the Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin tent manages its space better than most by offering three separate rooms as well as an awning for exterior space. Keep in mind, this comes on top of the electric port, plenty of gear storage, and pre-attached poles to make setting this tent up easier than most.

The Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin tent is also one of the more portable tents that we encountered as well thanks to the second-lightest weight on our list of 39 pounds. Also, while this tent may not be nearly as tall as some of its competition, the maximum height of 6’4” combined with almost vertical walls makes sure its functional space is among the best.

On the other hand, the Walmart cost to benefit ratio comes through in some negative ways as well with the Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin tent being one of the least durable we reviewed. As if that were not bad enough, this tent is also less waterproof than most of the competition with a standard floor, average sealed seams, and a hydrostatic rating that hovers between 600 to 800 mm.

  • PROs

    • Is 14’ x 14’ & 6’4” tall
    • Only weighs 39 lbs
    • Has three rooms and an awning
    • Is less expensive
  • CONs

    • Not the most durable
    • Not the most waterproof

Bottom-Line: If you need a tent for tall people that does not cost much money, the Ozark Trail 11 Person Cabin tent sweetens the deal by being one of the largest models we encountered with plenty of extra features.

Gazelle T4 Plus

Easiest Set Up Tent for Tall People

Gazelle Tents T4 Plus Outdoor Pop Up 8 Person Hub Tent with Screen Room, Orange

The Gazelle T4 Plus tent is by one of the easiest tents to assemble that we came across thanks to its pop-up design. Of course, that is nowhere near the only extra feature that this tent offers as it also comes with more storage pockets than any other option we reviewed with six standard pockets and a gear loft.

Beyond that, the Gazelle T4 Plus tent manages its space better than most of the competition, with two separate rooms, six windows, and two doors. Keep in mind, even though it is billed as an eight-person tent that does not include the space necessary to store gear unless you use bunk cots for sleeping arrangements.

In terms of general specs, Gazelle also recognizes the need for a great all-around build and provides one of the more durable setups we encountered with a 210T polyester canopy and rainfly as well as a 300D Oxford weave polyester floor. As if that were not enough, this tent also provides better waterproofing than most with a hydrostatic rating of 2000 mm for the canopy and rainfly and a hydrostatic rating of 5000 mm for the floor.

Of course, you do not get both a great build and plenty of extra features for nothing, and the Gazelle T4 Plus is an expensive tent. To make matters worse, the solid space management of this tent does not change the fact that it is one of the smaller tents on our list at only 14’ x 7’ of room, though it still provides a maximum height of 6’6” tall.

  • PROs

    • Is easy to assemble
    • Is more durable
    • Has great waterproofing
    • Has numerous extra features
  • CONs

    • Has a higher price tag
    • Not the biggest

Bottom-Line: The Gazelle T4 Plus tent provides a great mix of durable materials, superior waterproofing, and a bevy of different extra features that make it an excellent choice for those who like bells and whistles with quality.

Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person

Most Portable Tent for Tall People

Coleman 8-Person Camping Tent with Built-in Closet | Tenaya Lake Cabin Tent with Fast Pitch Setup

The Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person Tent is the lightest option on our list at 35 pounds, though it is still far too heavy for backpacking. Yet, Coleman combines this lightweight design with one of the more compact profiles we encountered with a packed size of 34 ½” x 13” x 11 ½”.

Coleman also put their experience to work when coming up with extra features, and the Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person Tent is the only model that we saw that comes with a closet for holding your clothing and gear to free up more functional space. Beyond the closet, this tent also has two separate rooms and is the only model with a hinged door, not to mention the four mesh gear storage pockets and the electric port.

With all of these great features, perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person tent is its low price. While this model is billed as an 8 person tent, the 13’ x 9’ of floor room makes comfortably arranging that many people a bit tricky without the use of bunk cots. However, at 6′ 8″ tall, all but the tallest of campers will not have to worry about stooping.

That said, a great tent has to cost something, and for this option, the cost comes in the form of durability as the 185T polyester taffeta canopy, and rainfly are more fragile than average. It also does not help that even with the patented WeatherTec system’s welded bathtub floors and inverted seams, the 800 mm hydrostatic rating is lower than average and won’t hold up too well in severe weather conditions.

  • PROs

    • Only weighs 35 lbs
    • Packs up to 34 ½” x 13” x 11 ½”
    • Has numerous extra features
    • Is less expensive
  • CONs

    • Not the most durable
    • Not the most waterproof

Bottom-Line: If you want a tent with some unique extra features, the Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person tent has you covered and is also one of the more portable large family tents we found.

Timber Ridge Log Cabin Tent

Best Tall Cabin Tent

Timber Ridge 8-Man Log Cabin Tent

The Timber Ridge Log Cabin tent is one of the few models on our list that incorporates a freestanding design that can be further reinforced if you feel the need. Thanks to the vertical walls and substantial floor space, you can fit 8 people in this model, though you may want to use bunk cots for additional comfort.

It is worth noting that this is more of a warm-weather tent, but this instant cabin tent accomplishes that task better than most thanks to 4 mesh windows, a completely mesh roof, and even mesh vents. Like many other tents for tall people, the Timber Ridge Log Cabin tent has many extra features with the mesh porch easily being one of the most impressive.

On top of that, this is one of the larger tents that we have reviewed with a whopping 13’ x 12’ footprint and the second-tallest height of 7’2”. What is even more surprising is that, despite being more substantial than most of the competition, the Timber Ridge Log Cabin tent also packs down smaller than any other model at 34” x 12” x 12”.

Of course, you still have to pay for all of these great features and specs, and the Timber Ridge Log Cabin tent is an expensive option. Also, while the freestanding instant cabin design might make it easier to pitch since it requires a smaller total footprint, it makes it more challenging to assemble than many other options we reviewed.

  • PROs

    • Is 13’ x 12’ x 7’2”
    • Packs up to 34” x 12” x 12”
    • Has great ventilation
    • Has numerous extra features
  • CONs

    • Is more expensive
    • Difficult to assemble

Bottom-Line: When you consider that the Timber Ridge Log Cabin tent offers the best warm-weather arrangement and can stand without additional support, the mesh porch is just a cherry on top.

Dream House Yurt Bell Tent

Best Overall Tall Tent

Dream House Outdoor Waterproof Cotton Canvas Family Camping Bell Tent (Beige Cotton Canvas Tent, Diameter 4 Meter)

The Dream House Yurt Bell Tent offers some of the best specs across the board and leads our list in numerous categories– especially for height. That said, even Dream House’s relative inexperience does not preclude it from recognizing the need for an excellent all-around build– something more established brands occasionally forget.

However, it is essential to remember that this brand offers three different sizes of the canvas tent, but even their smallest model still provides a solid height of 6’6” while their tallest option towers at 9’9 ½”. Even better, this tent offers some of the largest total space, with the largest model providing a 16’5” diameter, which is the largest that we reviewed.

Beyond simple-sized specs, the Dream House Yurt Bell Tent also comes in at or near the top in terms of durability with a canopy made out of 285 gsm cotton canvas and a floor made out of 540 gsm PVC. As if that were not enough, this tent also offers some of the best waterproofing with a 3000 mm hydrostatic rating for the canopy and a 5000 mm hydrostatic rating for the floor.

On the other hand, the Dream House Yurt Bell Tent averages as an expensive tent, regardless of the size that you choose. It also does not help that even the small tent is one the heavy side for our list, while the larger models can be up to twice as heavy as their competitors.

  • PROs

    • Is 9’9 ½” to 16’5” in diameter
    • Is 6’6” to 9’9 ½” tall
    • Is more durable
    • Has great waterproofing
  • CONs

    • Is more expensive
    • Is a heavier tent

Bottom-Line: The Dream House Yurt Bell Tent may only offer mild extra features, but it does such an excellent job of covering the bases that those looking at tents for tall people should stop and take notice.
