Best Sleeping Bag for a Tall Man: 2024 Review

Best Sleeping Bag for Tall Man

TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag

TETON Sports Celsius XXL 0 Degree Sleeping Bag - 0˚F Cold-Weather Sleeping Bag for Adults– Camping Made Easy….and Warm. Compression Sack Included

The TETON Sports Celsius XXL sleeping bag is our overall winner offering a great mix of features at a low price. A great example of this is the SuperLoft Elite Hollow Fiber insulation, which provides the second-lowest lower limit reviewed at a frigid 0-degrees Fahrenheit.

At second-longest bag on our list at 90″ x 39″, not even the tallest of folk need worry. The exterior is made out of solid polyester taffeta, while the interior is made out of a brushed polyester flannel that is softer to the touch than many of its competitors.

While the TETON Sports Celsius XXL sleeping bag is rectangular and does not include a hood, it has a padded interior with a pillow-like head. As if that were not enough, you can also keep your phone or other necessary camping gear close at hand, thanks to the inclusion of an interior pocket.

Bottom Line: Given the price of the TETON Sports Celsius XXL sleeping bag, it is especially surprising that it is one of the longest and warmest models on our list, not counting the numerous extra features.

Stay Warm with the Best Sleeping Bags for a Tall Man

Looking for the Sleeping Bags Best Suited for Tall Guys?

You’re in the right place! In this guide, we will be covering the following:

    • Cover which specifications are the most important
    • Review five of the top tall sleeping bags on the market
    • Give our unbiased #1 pick for a tall sleeping bag to keep you warm

While on camping trips, one thing that can ruin your trip quicker than most other inconveniences is the inability to get a good night’s rest. Thankfully, most sleeping bags include a wide swath of different features to make sure that most people do not have to worry about that issue.

However, most sleeping bags are made with the average person in mind, which can leave some people out in the cold at night. A perfect example of this is tall people who often find the average sleeping bag too short to cover their body completely, which is especially tough in cold weather.

We’ve put together a list of the five best sleeping bags for tall people, highlighting what each one does best. We also provide a thorough buyer’s guide, so you know what to look for in your next sleeping bag to get the best rest and keep you warm on your next car camping trip.

What features to Consider

Comfort & Fit

Dimensions

Considering our article focuses explicitly on camping equipment for tall people, this is easily one of the more critical considerations. That said, most sleeping bags with a “regular” and “long” size are at least long enough to accommodate a 6’6″ person. Of course, you may need more length than this to account for how you move while you sleep.

Arguably just as important, at least as it relates to comfort, is the width of your sleeping bag, which can range anywhere from 3′ to 5′.

Mummy vs. Rectangular

The differences between mummy and rectangular sleeping bags hinge on whether you want more space or more warmth.

Mummy style bags tend to be more efficient with how they insulate due to the lack of “dead-space” within the bag. However, this can feel a little too claustrophobic for some.

On the other hand, rectangular sleeping bags allow more freedom of movement, particularly at the shoulders and hips. This does, however, mean that you will lose some of the insulating properties compared to a mummy-style bag which may result in heat loss and cold spots.

Lastly, it is also worth noting that mummy sleeping bags are usually lighter than rectangular ones due to the form-fitting design and lack of wasted material.

Hoods

This feature tends to be found on mummy sleeping bags more than rectangular ones, but both designs can have one. The main benefit of a hood is that it helps keep your head warm in freezing weather conditions where a significant portion of your body heat would otherwise escape.

While technically not a full-blown hood, it is worth noting some sleeping bags still provide insulation for the head — though it is not entirely effective.

Zippers

While this section may seem best-served by considering the actual zipper in question, with YKK taking the top spot, the design is equally important.

Double-pull zippers are those which can be opened from both the inside of the sleeping bag as well as the outside.

Likewise, locking zippers do as their name suggests and lock in place to prevent you from accidentally opening the zipper while tossing in your sleep.

Finally, zippers extending to the sleeping bag’s bottom allow you to use the sleeping bag as a quilt or shawl if desired.

Fill & Warmth

Synthetic vs. Down

While down bags tend to get a boost in prestige compared to synthetic fill materials, it is not universally better. Down fill is warmer for the same weight as synthetic materials, better able to trap heat within the space between the different under feathers.

However, synthetic fills are naturally more water-resistant than down and can improve the overall water-resistance of a sleeping bag. On top of that, synthetic fill tends to be less expensive than down as it is often made of polyester or nylon fibers.

Warmth Ratings

Quite often, you will see a number in front of the “fill” for a sleeping bag, but this does not necessarily tell you the temperature rating. For sleeping bags, the temperature rating will always be given in degrees F, though different manufacturers break that down further into grades.

An excellent example of this is the difference between comfort, tested, and lower limit. NB. Don’t expect the lower limit to keep you comfortable.

Rather than going for the lowest rated bag possible, a great way to save a little money is to pair your bag with a sleeping pad.

Weight & Packed Size

The weight and packed size of a bag when stuffed in it’s compression sack is more important for backpackers or someone who wants to hike to a more remote campsite than for casual campers. On top of that, sleeping bags for a tall man are inherently heavier and less compact than other types of sleeping bags due to the extra material.

Liner Materials

This could arguably be considered a “comfort” quality, but it also falls into the durability category. The overwhelming majority of sleeping bags, regardless of their target demographic, use synthetic materials for both the shell and the lining.

However, some manufacturers simply use a single material and call it a day, while other manufacturers employ different weaves or threads for the lining. An excellent example of this is a sleeping bag that uses either nylon or polyester for both the shell and lining but makes it a point to use a softer thread on the lining to make it more comfortable.

Best Sleeping Bags for Tall People: The Results

Coleman Big Basin Adult Sleeping Bag

Best Budget Tall Bag

Coleman Big Basin 15 Big and Tall Adult Sleeping Bag

Coleman is one of the oldest and most popular companies on our list, which is a big part of why they can make a tall sleeping bag that is so inexpensive. Thankfully, the Coleman Big Basin 15 sleeping bag’s price does not otherwise impede its overall quality as this is the longest product we reviewed at 92″ x 39″.
One of the more intriguing qualities of this sleeping bag is that it includes a hood even though it employs a rectangular design instead of a mummy one. The unexpected extra features continue as the Coleman Big Basin 15 sleeping bag is the only entry on our list with a special quilted footbox to keep your feet extra warm.
The zipper on this sleeping bag is also great as it uses the convenient double-pull design and the ZipPlow feature to prevent the zipper from snagging on the sleeping bag fabric. While no denier rating is given, the Coleman Big Basin 15 sleeping bag uses ripstop polyester for the shell.
That said, this is not the sleeping bag you should take on a camping trip to an icy climate as the ColeTherm insulation leaves its lower limit is only 20-degrees. On top of that, the Coleman Big Basin 15 sleeping bag is not ideal for backpackers with the heaviest weight reviewed at 8 lbs 3 oz.

  • PROs

    • Is 80″ x 39″
    • Has air vents
    • Is more comfortable
    • Is less expensive
  • CONs

Kelty Tuck 20 Degree Sleeping Bag – Long

Most Durable Tall Bag

Kelty Tuck 40 Degree Thermapro Ultra LH Sleeping Bag, Lyons Blue/Smoke, Long

The Kelty Tuck 20 Degree sleeping bag is easily the most durable entry on our list. Thanks to the use of 75D polyester taffeta, which is significantly stronger than any other model we encountered. What makes this all the more surprising is that this sleeping bag is inexpensive, but still offers plenty of value.
For example, this might be the least expensive option for backpackers in particular as it only weighs a meager 2 lbs 9 oz. To make sure that the lightweight design matches a compact profile, the Kelty Tuck 20 Degree bag also packs down to 15″ x 8 ⅔”– the second-smallest packed size we reviewed.
As you can see from its design, the Kelty Tuck 20 Degree sleeping bag employs the mummy profile, which includes a hood to keep your head warm. Beyond that, this sleeping bag also comes with a quilted, padded liner to make it more comfortable and a tuck zipper to prevent accidental openings.
Unfortunately, not everything about the Kelty Tuck 20 Degree sleeping bag is great as this model has the highest lower limit temperature rating on our list at 20-degrees F. On top of that, this is also one of the shortest models we found at 78″– though it provides plenty of space to move around at 62/58″ wide.

    • Only weighs 2 lbs 9 oz
    • Packs down to 15″ x 8 ⅔”

The North Face One Bag Sleeping Bag

Most Versatile Tall Bag

The North Face OneBag Image

The North Face One Bag sleeping bag is easily one of the more versatile entries on our list in a couple of ways, not the least of which is its multiple shells that allow you to customize the warmth rating. This sleeping bag comes with two different shells, one rated at 20-degrees and the other measured at 40-degrees F.
What makes this arrangement even better is that when you combine the two shells, you get one of the lower limit ratings on our list at 5-degrees. Still, The North Face One Bag sleeping bag’s versatility is not exhausted as you can use one of the shells as a shawl or a pillow.
A big part of how this sleeping bag accomplishes its temperature ratings is through the use of 800-fill goose down, which is the most insulation on our list. Even better, this is one of the few mummy bags that does not fail in terms of length either measured at 85″ x 63/59″.
Of course, having some of the best qualities across the board does not come cheaply, and The North Face One Bag is an expensive option. Also, even though it is lightweight at only 3 lbs 2 oz, the packed size of 14″ x 11″ is just a bit too large for trekking.

  • PROs

    • Is 85″ x 63/59″
    • Only weighs 3 lbs 12 oz
    • Suitable for 5-degrees
    • Has a convertible design
  • CONs

Mountain Equipment Helium 400

Warmest Tall Sleeping Bag

Mountain Equipment HELIUM 400 SLEEPING BAG COSMOS LONG (LEFT ZIP)

The Mountain Equipment Helium 400 sleeping bag tops our list in terms of lower limit temperature rating at -2-degrees Fahrenheit and is the only model to drop below 0-degrees F. Part of its incredible warmth rating comes down to the 700-fill 90/10 goose down, which is the second-best we reviewed.
However, the Mountain Equipment Helium 400 sleeping bag is also one of the best-constructed entries on our list and with slanted box-wall baffles. Even better, the use of high-end baffling does not stop with the walls as hood and foot box both include five and four-baffle constructions, respectively.
While its incredible insulation is good enough, the Mountain Equipment Helium 400 sleeping bag is also one of the best options for backpackers. This sleeping bag comes in as the lightest model on our list at 1 lb 14 oz and is also the most compact with a packed size of 9 ½” x 7.87″ x 6 ⅔”.
Of course, the other shoe has to drop and much like another model with some of the highest ratings across the board; the Mountain Equipment Helium 400 is an expensive option. Also, like some of the other mummy design products, this model is not the longest at only 78″ x 62″.

  • PROs

    • Only weighs 1 lb 14 oz
    • Packs down to 9 ½” x 7.87″ x 6 ⅔”

Best Sleeping Bag for Tall People

TETON Sports Celsius XXL 0 Degree Sleeping Bag - 0˚F Cold-Weather Sleeping Bag for Adults– Camping Made Easy….and Warm. Compression Sack Included

The TETON Sport Celsius XXL captured our best overall sleeping bag because it is the best all-around sleeping bag with a price point much lower than you would expect. For one, this is the second-longest sleeping bag that we reviewed at 90″ x 39″ and able to accommodate restless sleep from folks 6’6″ and taller.
Even better, this sleeping bag has the second-lowest lower limit temperature rating that we found at only 0-degrees Fahrenheit. Still, it is the extra features combined with these solid specs that drew us to the TETON Sports Celsius XXL sleeping bag in the first place.
For example, the exterior shell of this sleeping bag may use taffeta polyester, but the interior employs a brushed poly flannel thread that is incredibly soft. Even better, the TETON Sports Celsius XXL sleeping bag includes a half-mummy hood and padding for more comfort as well as an interior storage pocket.
Despite all of these great things, this sleeping bag is not ideal for all situations with backpackers, in particular losing out on the value. While sitting near the top is great in most instances, the fact that the TETON Sports Celsius XXL tall sleeping bag is the second-heaviest at 7 lbs and 17 ½” 12 ¼” when packed is not one of those instances.

  • PROs

    • Is 90″ x 39″
    • Suitable for 0-degrees
    • More comfortable than most
    • Is less expensive
  • CONs
